Filled with the Holy Spirit

by | Apr 29, 2026

Living by the Spirit isn’t just a one time experience, it’s an ongoing reality that transforms how we walk through life. Many believers struggle with understanding what it truly means to be filled with the Holy Spirit and how this impacts their daily walk with God.

Do You Have the Holy Spirit?

If you’re a follower of Jesus, the answer is yes. According to Ephesians 1, we are “marked with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit gift guaranteeing our inheritance.” At salvation, the Holy Spirit takes up residence in your life.

However, there’s a difference between having the Holy Spirit and being filled with the Spirit. The real question isn’t whether you’ve had a moment or experience, it’s whether you’re living under the Spirit’s influence right now.

How Should We Live as Spirit-Filled Believers?

Watch How You Walk

“‘Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.'” Ephesians 5:15-17

This passage calls us to examine our lives carefully. Pay attention to the patterns in your daily walk. Sometimes we drift away from God’s will into our own will without even realizing it.

God’s Will Isn’t a Mystery

Many believers get trapped thinking God’s will is some hidden secret they need to figure out. This is a lie from the enemy. God has already revealed His will through His Word. As John Stott said, “God’s will is not a mystery to be solved, but a path to be walked.”

God’s will includes:

  • Living a holy life
  • Representing Him well in all circumstances
  • Following the principles laid out in Scripture

If you’re struggling to hear from God, examine these areas:

  • Are you praying regularly?
  • Are you reading God’s Word?
  • Is there unconfessed sin creating separation?

What Does It Mean to Be Filled with the Spirit?

“‘And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.'” Ephesians 5:18

Paul uses alcohol as a metaphor because alcohol controls you. It alters your thinking, speech, and behavior. Similarly, the Holy Spirit should have that same level of influence over your life.

The key phrase “be filled” is present and ongoing. This isn’t about one altar experience or camp moment. Being filled with the Spirit is something that happens again and again and again.

It’s Not About Quantity, But Control

The question isn’t “How much of the Spirit do I have?” but rather “How much of me does the Spirit have?”

D.L. Moody was once asked why he needed to be continually filled with the Holy Spirit. His response: “Because I leak.” We all leak. You don’t stay full by accident, you stay full by surrender.

What Happens When You’re Not Spirit-Filled?

If you’re not being filled with the Spirit, you will be filled with something else:

  • Anxiety
  • Anger
  • Comparison
  • Entertainment
  • Control
  • Fear

The sooner you realize you can’t live the Christian life in your own strength, the sooner you’ll be free. You can’t do this, but the Spirit of God can do this in you.

Signs of Being Spirit-Filled

According to Ephesians 5:19-21, Spirit-filled believers demonstrate:

Worship and Gratitude

“‘Addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.'” Ephesians 5:19-20

Worship should flow naturally from a Spirit-filled life, not just on Sundays, but in how you speak and live throughout the week.

The Power of Gratitude

Gratitude is one of the greatest tools for spiritual health. Studies show it’s nearly impossible to be anxious and grateful at the same time. When anxiety hits, start thanking God specifically:

  • Thank Him for waking up today
  • Thank Him for provision and basic needs
  • Thank Him for family and relationships
  • Thank Him for His faithfulness

Mutual Submission

“‘Submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.'” Ephesians 5:21
Spirit filled believers submit to one another in love, creating healthy relationships in marriage, family, and church community.

Life Application

This week, commit to being filled with the Spirit daily. Start each morning by surrendering control to God and asking Him to fill you afresh. Create space for Him to speak through prayer and Bible reading. Practice gratitude throughout your day, thanking God for specific blessings.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What areas of my life am I trying to control instead of surrendering to the Spirit?
  • How much time am I spending in prayer and God’s Word compared to entertainment or other distractions?
  • What evidence of Spirit-filled living (joy, worship, gratitude, submission) is visible in my daily life?
  • What do I need to surrender today to allow the Spirit greater control?

Remember, being filled with the Spirit isn’t a one-time event. It’s a daily choice to surrender your will to God’s will and allow His Spirit to guide, control, and empower your life.
